Liver
Liver - located on the right side of the abdominal cavity beneath the diaphragm. The liver
helps in metabolism of proteins and carbohydrates and fat.
Liver Functions:
- Produces digestive enzymes that break down fats
- Convert glucose to glycogen
- Produce urea (the main substance of urine)
- Detoxify the body by metabolizing and/or secreting, drugs, alcohol, and environmental toxins
- Makes certain amino acids (the building blocks of proteins)
- Filters harmful substances from the blood (such as alcohol)
- Stores vitamins and minerals
- Form and secrete bile that contains bile acids to aid in the intestinal absorption (taking in) of fats and the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K
- Maintains proper level or glucose in the blood
- Responsible for producing 80% of the cholesterol in the body
